Honors given at Bob Shay banquet

WRHS student athletes


Wood River High School saluted its "Best of the Best," during the 2006 Bob Shay Most Inspirational awards banquet Monday night in the commons area of the high school.

Top Wood River students in extracurricular activities received accolades and plaques. Judged by a vote of coaches as "Most Outstanding Senior Athletes," for 2005-06 were Scott Bartlett and Jamie Stone.

This was the ninth year that Wood River honored its three-activity lettermen. Singled out were Samantha Engel, Jamie Stone, Corbin Miniard, Jesse Stark, Erik Jacobson, Ashley Rendahl, Hannah Gove, Casey Lane and Cory Rutkowski.

The presentation of Allan Lee Patterson Memorial Awards to two outstanding senior students was another highlight of the program.

Selected by the Wood River coaching staff, the Patterson honors were given for the 29th time in memory of Hailey's Allan Patterson, a 1975 Wood River graduate and talented alpine skier who died in 1977.

This year's Allan Patterson winners were Margii Driscoll and Carl Browning.

U.S. Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete awards were presented to Hannah Richards and Morgan Uhrig. Army Reserve Scholar/Athlete honors for the 2005-06 school year went to Hadley DeBree and Casey Lane.

Ashley Rendahl earned the Rose Bergin Memorial Award. It was given for the 26th time to the Wolverine girl who possesses the qualities of Bergin, a 1977 WRHS graduate and runner who died of cancer.

The athletic department christenened a new award, the Monte Brothwell Award honoring the noted Bellevue runner who has completed 46 marathons. Nick Purdy, a Wolverine runner, accepted the new Brothwell Award.

Given the Wolverine Award were Kenny Mauro, Jared Stoltzfus, Kyle Niedrich, Abby Fairman, Cassi Rushton, Nancy Tamayo and Charlene Fields.

Bob Shay "Most Inspirational" awards were presented to athletes in each of the school's varsity sports and to participants in activities like drama, cheerleading and band.

The awards, once called Rick Hawkes Memorial, were given for the 17th time in honor of coach Shay. Shay "Inspirational" awards went to:

· Fall sports—Lauren Morgenthaler in volleyball; Rosie Gilchrisst and Pedro Morales in cross country; Dixon Mooseau in boys' soccer; Nicole Schulz in girls' soccer; and Carl Browning in football.

· Winter sports—Kyle Lubeck in boys' basketball; Jamie Stone in girls' basketball; and Jordan Vert in wrestling.

· Spring sports—Carl Browning in boys' track; Ashley Rendahl in girls' track; Whitney DeBree and Alex Henning in tennis; Casey Hawkes in baseball; Kyler VanDyck and Brook Kolarich in golf; Jamie Stone in softball.

· Other activities—Cassie Rushton in cheerleading; Matthew Gappmeyer in speech; and Tenny Babcock in debate;

Brooke Hand and Joseph Zeman in drama; Brian Town and Marne Elmore in band; Kelsie Barrow and Joe Zeman in choir; and Kimbra Turner and Alan Beserra in orchestra.

Presented for the 18th time was the "Shay Cup," which goes to a Wood River coach/advisor in Shay's name. This year's winners were softball coach Dale Martin and cheerleading-track coach Jeannie Bradshaw.
