Custer Sheriff investigates rafting death

By EXPRESS STAFF

The Custer County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a Colorado man who died last week on a rafting trip on Marsh Creek, northwest of Stanley.

According to the sheriff's office, the death was reported on Friday as a heart attack, but when officers arrived at the scene they ascertained that the man "had gone into the water from a raft that had flipped" the previous day.

The man was identified as 50-year-old James Stewart of Telluride. He was a member of a rafting party on Marsh Creek, some 15 miles northwest of Stanley.

The U.S. Forest Service and the Custer County Coroner's Office assisted in recovering the body.

The sheriff's office declined Monday to release additional information, except to say that float trips are dangerous in the area because of the high water.
