Community fun run coming May 13

Come out, support Girls on the Run

The Wood River community is invited to help celebrate spring on Saturday, May 13, during the third annual Community 5K Fun Run and Healthy Living Expo.

The family-friendly course winds its way through Hailey's Della View subdivision, beginning and ending at Heagle Park. Participants of all abilities and ages are welcome, including future athletes who are still in strollers. Last year over 250 community members and families participated.

The Healthy Living Expo at Heagle Park features booths of health-related information and fun activities for all to enjoy. St. Luke's will have activities and information promoting healthy lifestyles, the HUB teen center will have a bouncy castle, and YAK will be on the course with younger participants and face painting. The YMCA will be celebrating Healthy Kids Day with an inflatable obstacle course and other activities to encourage kids and their families to stay active, connected and healthy. Many other organizations will be there, including SV Adaptive Sports, the Animal Shelter, Advocates, Galena Kids Camp, Wood River Rideshare, ERC and more.

The Community 5K Fun Run will begin at 9:30 AM and the Healthy Living Expo will run from 9:30 -- 11:30. There will be t-shirts for 5K participants with prizes and giveaways.

The event is hosted by Girls on the Run of the Wood River Valley, a non-profit character-building program that uses the power of running to strengthen the way girls see themselves and life's opportunities. Girls in grades 3-8 combine training for a 3.1 mile run/walk event with self-esteem enhancing lessons and workouts that inspire them to a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Started here in 2002 with 14 girls, this spring season has a record 79 participants.

Registration forms for the 5K are available at local retailers; on Friday night, May 12, 6-8 PM at St. Luke's Center for Community Health, 309 Main Street, Hailey; on race day 8-9 AM at Heagle Park or online at www.active.com. Event fees are $20 adult, $10 student (18 and under), $40 family. Scholarships are available. There is no charge for the Healthy Living Expo.

If Heagle Park is flooded, the event will be moved to the Wood River High School football field.

The premier sponsor of the event is St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center. Additional sponsors include First Bank of Idaho, Atkinsons Markets', and Elkhorn Springs.
