Zachary joins Laredo Broncos

United Baseball League

Former Wood River High School pitcher Matt Zachary left Idaho Thursday to join the Laredo Broncos minor league baseball team in Texas.

His dream has always been to pitch professionally and now 6-4, 235-pound Zachary is giving it a chance in Texas, said his mother Sandy Alford of Hailey. Zachary has been living in Boise and working at Idaho Athletic Club the last year.

Righthander Zachary, 23, is a 2000 Wood River graduate who pitched for three different colleges before graduating with academic honors in 2005 from Albertson College in Caldwell.

He was 6-4 with a 4.90 ERA in his senior year for Albertson College and was named an NAIA All-America Scholar Athlete. Zachary also pitched for Hawaii Pacific and Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Ore.

The Laredo Broncos is an independent minor league baseball team in Laredo, Texas. It is one of six charter member of United League Baseball for 2006. The Broncos' 45-game season is from May 16 through Aug. 23 followed by playoffs.

Laredo field manager is Mike Smith, a former Baltimore pitcher. Zachary's older brother, Shannon Alford, lives in Springfield, Mo. and is a friend of fellow Springfield resident Smith. That's how the Broncos manager learned about Zachary.

Ticket prices are affordable at $7, $6 and $5.
