Sixteen-year-old Ali Butler of the Sun Valley Figure Skating Club, a sophomore at Wood River High School, earned two U.S. Figure Skating gold medals in the categories of Senior Moves and Senior Freeskating. Passing these two tests moves her into senior level competitive ranking. She will skate her first senior level competition this month in Tacoma, Wash.
Butler is currently ranked 6th in the junior level for skaters in the Pacific Northwest. Last March she was awarded the most artistic performance at a Jackson Hole event.
Only 200 skaters nationwide pass these tests each year. Butler was required to execute 4 double jumps, 2 double/double jump combinations, 4 spins and a variety of other elements in a 4-minute program. Butler has spent most of her 8-year competitive career training with Sun Valley-based coaches Holly Wheeler and Gia Guddat.
Ashley Watson, 17, a junior at WRHS, also passed the Senior Moves test, earning her first gold medal. Other members of the SVFS club who passed tests in Boise last month were Nicole Pratt, Katherine Dwyer, Madigan Miller, Larry Schoenike and Barbara Richardson.
