Ketchum athletic center expanding its operations

High Altitude Fitness reacts to growing demand

With indoor fitness options dwindling, some Ketchum athletic centers are stepping up to fill the gap.

High Altitude Fitness, located at 251 Northwood Way in Ketchum's light industrial district, is expanding its facility, adding equipment and securing an additional 2,000 square-feet of floor space.

"Business was up in March and April, and I expect it will be in May and June," said co-owner Kevin Mora.

Expansion will include more floor space for added aerobics, spin, Pilates and yoga classes, new cardio machines and Life Fitness strength-training systems.

Also scheduled is development of an Elite Training Center, an indoor golf and batting cage.

Two rooms across the parking lot, where KSKI/KECH radio studios are currently located, will house the additions.

The decision was prompted by the area's steady population growth, the health-conscious lifestyle embraced by Wood River Valley residents and the announcement that Sun Valley Athletic Club in Ketchum is closing at the end of May.

"We've had a lot of inquiries and phone calls and tons of new signups," Mora said.

One day before they learned of the Athletic Club's closing, Mora and his wife, Holly, bought the building they're in.

The next day, they made arrangements to secure additional space.

"By buying our space it ensures Ketchum will have an affordable gym," Mora said.

The expansion is slated for completion in July.
