A Capital challenge

Opponents get tougher for WRHS tennis

Ratcheting up the challenge with post-season meets on the horizon, the Wood River High School tennis team had a great spring weekend in Boise.

They competed with 23 other schools in the 28th annual Capital Classic Invitational.

Wolverine coach Vicki Johnston said, "It was a great weekend. We got to see some high-level competition and we all had positive learning experiences. The team is ready to work hard to get ready for districts and especially for state."

Hermiston (Ore.) won the team championship over Idaho Falls. Wood River didn't bring home any hardware, but the Hailey squad did good things.

Wood River's #1 mixed doubles team of Cory Rutkowski and Whitney DeBree won their matches in Friday's round-robin pro-set play to advance into Saturday's championship round—where they had a tough draw and lost 7-6, 7-5 to a team from Kennewick, Ore.

#3 girls' singles Tanya Greenwood was the only other Wolverine to make Saturday's championship draw. Once there, she won her first match against a player from Lewiston, then lost in a third-set tiebreaker to a Nampa player.

Other Wolverines did well in Saturday's consolation draw.

Anna Chrysikopoulos buzzed through her #2 girls' singles competition for the consolation championship with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over a Skyline (Idaho Falls) opponent.

Making the semi-finals were #1 girls' singles Hadley DeBree and #2 girls' doubles Alexis Greenwood and Ashley Prior.

The Wolverines clashed with The Community School Tuesday in a big meet at Sun Valley. Today, Wednesday, there is a home make-up match with Gooding at 3:30 p.m. at the high school courts in Hailey, then it's off to Minico Thursday.

With the Minico match at Rupert, Wood River (9-3-3) will be trying to finish its Great Basin Conference West season with a perfect 6-0 mark in dual meets against Minico, Burley and Jerome. The conference tournament is next week.
