Trout power on display in 8-4 win

Staying undefeated for the 2006 prep tennis season, The Community School Cutthroats pulled off a big non-conference victory Wednesday with an 8-4 road success at 5A Twin Falls.

Coach Phil Huss's Cutthroats (3-0-1, 1-0 league) swept girls' singles, girls' doubles and mixed doubles and added a victory in #2 boys' singles to get the best of Twin Falls (3-3).

Leading the way was the girls' doubles team of senior Devon Bunce and junior Mandy Alexander. They've each won two state championships—together in girls' doubles last spring, and Bunce in girls' doubles and Alexander in mixed doubles back in 2004.

Wednesday, Bunce and Alexander spotted their Bruin opponents the first set and then roared back for an important 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 triumph in #1 girls' doubles. Also winning in split sets were #2 girls' doubles Grayson Palmer and Emily Eshman, a junior and soph.

Sweeping girls' singles, all in straight sets for the Cutthroats, were #1 sophomore Cody Curran, #2 freshman Courtney Hamilton and #3 freshman Sarah Jane Slater.

It was a big hurdle to cross for the very young Sun Valley girls' singles players.

Travis Stone, #2 boys' singles sophomore, gave Sun Valley its only boys' victory with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 decision Wednesday.

Mixed doubles was also a success story in straight sets for the Cutthroats. Freshman Max Sabel and sophomore Jessie Curran won in #1, while returning state tournament qualifiers Connor Brown and McKenzie Hart, a sophomore and junior, prevailed in #2.

On Tuesday the Cutthroats posted their first 3A league triumph of the season with a 12-0 romp at Gooding. Huss' squad will now take a week off for freshman and sophomore trips.
