Alpine team honors its athletes, coaches

SVSEF season finale in Ketchum


Ketchum's nexStage Theatre was filled to capacity Thursday, April 13 for the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation's Alpine A-Team, B-Team & C-Travel Team awards banquet.

Ruben Macaya, alpine program director, welcomed racers, parents, coaches, tutors and guests to the fun evening.

C-Travel awards were presented by coach Justin Stevenson. Justin has been filling in while head coach Craig "Cheeso" Kjesbo battles cancer. Justin spoke of "Cheeso", his passion for ski racing and coaching, and the respect and love the kids, coaches and parents have for him. His absence at the banquet was huge.

MVPs were Nicole Roos and Tanner Farrow. Most Improved went to Erin Murphy and Colin Waycott. Most Inspirational awards voted by peers and coaches were presented to Emily Gillespie and brothers Connor and Tanner Farrow.

Scott McGrew, head B-Team coach, presented awards to the following racers: MVP to Scott Isaacs and Mandy Alexander, Most Improved to Jasmine Campbell and Tanner Flanigan,

Most Inspirational to Jasmine Campbell and Bo Brown.

Head A-Team coach Tyler Palmer presented his team's awards. Shanny Cohen and Carl Rixon received MVP; amd Most Improved went to Katie Rothgeb and Teton Brown. Most Inspirational were Elitsa Storey and Soren Ireland.

Making Senior Speeches were Corey Bellinger, Lauren Eder, Lauren Parsons, Laura Speck and Elitsa Storey. Each racer expressed their love for the sport and their teammates, coaches, parents, and tutors.

The Howard Dean Scholarship was presented to August Danielson by Peggy Dean and son, Ryan Dean.

The Academic Award was presented by John Cole to Laura Speck, Lauren Parsons, Elitsa Storey and Lauren Eder.

New this year, the Longevity Award, was presented to Laura Speck and Lauren Parsons for 12 years on ski team and Elitsa Storey for 11 years.

The Leif Odmark award for sportsmanship went to Emily Gillespie and Cole Caulkins on C-Travel, Karlee Stagg and Bo Brown on B-Team, Elitsa Storey and Carl Rixon on A-Team.

The Sigi and Peggy Engl Trophy is the most prestigious award given by the SVSEF. It is based on academic excellence, sportsmanship and athleticism. C-Team recipients were Grace Alexander and Zac Israel, B-Team Grayson Palmer and Michael Greer, and A-Team Lauren Eder and Teton Brown.
