Rixon, Eder among the West's elite

At FIS Spring Series

Finishing the 2005-06 alpine ski racing season with a flourish, Sun Valley's Carl Rixon Jr. recorded a slalom victory and Lauren Eder posted four excellent finishes during the Western Region FIS Elite Spring Series April 7-10 in California.

Rixon, 24, didn't waste any time bouncing back from a disappointing U.S. Alpine Championships at Sugarloaf, Me. in late March.

He placed third and fourth in the Spring Series giant slaloms at Mammoth Mountain and won the April 8 slalom by .17 seconds over 2006 Olympian Steven Nyman, 24, of the U.S. Ski Team and Park City, Utah.

It was a very solid season for Eder, 17, who logged eight top-10 finishes in International Ski Federation (FIS) races this season. At Mammoth Mountain she was third and sixth in giant slalom, and 14th and 20th in the slalom events.

The Spring Series attracted 109 of the nation's best male racers and 85 of the top U.S. women.

Other placings for Sun Valley men were Biche Rudigoz 13th and 24th GS, and 15th SL; Tristan Brown 81st and 80th GS, and 24th SL; Hunter Storey 42nd and 26th GS; and Robin Sarchett 8th GS.

Last Chance slaloms

Sun Valley's Eder also had a good weekend including a first-place finish when the Intermountain Division staged its Last Chance slalom races April 2-3 at Snowbird, Utah.

Eder won the April 3 slalom on the 47-gate Wilbere Ridge Race Hill course by .52 seconds over University of Utah racer Chelsea Laswell. She finished second in the April 2 SL taken by Snowbird's Chirine Njeim.

A number of Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation and Ketchum Alpine Racing skiers wrapped up their 2005-06 seasons at the Last Chance including Tristan Brown, who placed seventh overall and podiumed with a third-place J2 finish in the April 3 men's slalom.

Here are Last Chance best-of-weekend class placings. There were 63 women and 118 men competing:
