Ketchum Mayor Randy Hall is facing a new challenge, but this time it's regarding his health.

Hall's urologist confirmed Hall has prostate cancer following a test that indicated an elevated presence of prostate-specific antigens.

Hall said an early diagnosis means his chances for a full recovery are good.

"I expect a 100 percent recovery," he said in a written statement.

Hall, 47, said his father was diagnosed with the same cancer three years ago, which prompted Hall to take a blood test.

The prostate-specific antigen test result showed a significant rise in his PSA compared with the previous year's result.

A biopsy confirmed the existence of three small tumors.

"I'm grateful to have found it so early and consider myself to be one of the lucky ones," Hall said. "With early diagnosis, treatment modalities are less radical and easier to tolerate."

While one man in six will get prostate cancer during his lifetime, only one in 34 will die of the disease, according to the American Cancer Society.

Hall said he may miss a few city meetings during treatment, "but I will be back on my feet soon thereafter."

Hall works as a paramedic and sees the value of self-care.

"There's really no excuse for men to suffer from the realities of prostate or colon cancer in this day and age," he said.

"Even though our community is very focused on health and wellness, cancer continues to unfortunately affect many of us," he said. "So, as you can guess, my new mantra is to pay attention to your body and get to the doctor for your annual physical."
