The Wood River tennis team was in Burley on Tuesday and won their first team match, 7-5, by a last minute win from the number two girls doubles team, Alex Mallea and Kami Doan.
The weather held out for Wood River, who was looking to come back from a tough 10-2 loss against Hillcrest on March 29.
Wood River's number one singles players—Phillip Neely and Hadley DeBree—each won their matches handily, with DeBree not dropping a single game against Burley's Kylie Barrus.
With the exception of Neeley, though, the heroes of the day were all Wolverine women; all three girls singles players (DeBree, Anna Chrysikopolous and Ashley Prior) won their matches as did both girls' doubles teams.
In the end, it came down to a very close, three set doubles match won by Doan, a sophomore, and Mallea, a junior. After losing their first set in a 7-2 tiebreaker, they rallied to win the second and third.
"They just worked really hard and made the shots they needed to get the crucial points," said Head coach Vicki Johnston. "They were mentally strong—it was almost eight o'clock at night—everyone was watching and they just stayed real focused. There was a lot of good team support there."
The team's first home match is this coming Tuesday, April 11, at 3:30 p.m. and they are scheduled to play Jerome and Twin Falls this weekend. Results from Burley:
