Sawtooths host Nordic skier

Annual ski festival gets ready to run

The Sawtooth Ski Club celebrates its fourth Annual Sawtooth Ski Festival and fundraising event Saturday and Sunday, March 4 and 5.

The festival kicks off at 11 a.m. at the Park Creek Ski area, 7 miles west of Stanley, with the ever popular ski and snowshoe "Poker Run." Participants ski or snowshoe around a short course with five rest stops. Donations of $5 to $10 are suggested for participation in the event. One card is drawn at each rest stop and the lucky holder of the best poker hand wins a fabulous new pair of snowshoes.

Following the race, from noon to 2 p.m. delicious homemade chili and treats will be available to all.

Festivities on Saturday night begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Stanley Community Building where a delicious spaghetti and meatball dinner is available for $5. At the Sawtooth Ski Club's legendary silent auction bidders can bid on a variety of wonderful items donated by generous Ski Club supporters.

Dave Muscavage and Friends will entertain the crowd with lively bluegrass music.

The Ski Festival is the Sawtooth Ski Club's largest fund raising event of the year. Funds are used to continue to groom our incredible ski trails at Alturas Lake Ski Trail area, Park Creek Ski Trail area and the Stanley City Park. These trails provide Sawtooth Ski Club members and visitors to the area a quality ski experience in the Sawtooth Valley and Stanley Basin area.

The Alturas Ski Area is the location of Ski Festival Events, Sunday, March 5. Bob Wilkins will lead skiers and snowshoers on an informative and inspiring Wildlife Tracking Workshop at noon on Sunday. A Skate Ski Clinic will be held at 1 p.m. The Soup Kitchen Social takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on a lovely hilltop with magnificent views.

Events are free and donations are gratefully accepted. Check the Trailhead Kiosk for directions to all events. For more information, contact Karen at 774-3487.
