Baldy greets Monroe, Basolo racers

239 young bombers on Cozy, Hemingway

The victories went to out-of-town ski racers, but 86 local kids had a fine time under the Idaho sun last weekend during the Monroe Cup and Lonnie Basolo Memorial gate races on Baldy's Warm Springs side.

In all, 239 youngsters raced on Hemingway and Cozy.

Kids ages 7-12 invaded Baldy for slalom and giant slalom races in the J4-J6 classes. The Intermountain Division North and South Series event was hosted by the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation (Monroe Cup SL) and Hailey Ski Team (Basolo Memorial GS).

Winning boys' races were Max Martin of Jackson Hole (Wyo.) and Graham Black of Bogus Basin. Sun Valley's Tanner Farrow logged the best overall finish for locals with a second in Saturday's Cozy SL, .19 seconds behind Black. Miles Sweek of Hailey placed fourth in SL and seventh overall GS.

Girls' winners, both from Park City (Utah), were Sydney Staples and Jessica Delacenserie. Amanda Stelling of Hailey was third overall in Sunday's Basolo Memorial GS.

Those climbing the podium were Tanner Farrow, Miles Sweek and Stelling among J4s (ages 11-12); Kipling Weisel and Adam Brown among local J5s (9-10); Dominic Calhoon, Austin Savaria, Marie Hoopes, Haley Cutler and Josie Allison among the local J6s (7-8).
