Chad Levitan scored the game-winning goal in sudden-death overtime Monday, lifting the Sun Valley Midgets high school hockey team to a thrilling 5-4 victory over Team Wyoming in the championship game of the Great Western Showcase tournament in Utah.
Goalies Regan O'Reilly (70 saves on 75 shots) and Colby Stoecklein (12 saves on 12 shots) were just outstanding. And the young Suns played well as a team at Salt Lake City.
Sun Valley dominated the high-level, four-day Midget AA tournament featuring six teams. Coach Andrew Hebert and Cruger Thomas' Suns posted three shutouts 5-0, 5-0 and 4-0 in preliminary play then won the semi-final 10-1 over Portland—Levitan scoring the three-goal hat trick.
Levitan was also the hero in Monday's title game. Levitan (6 goals/2 assists) and Carl Jablonski (5/2) led the young Suns in goal scoring. Top point getters from Sun Valley were Spencer Brendel (6/4) and Sinjin Thomas (2/8, playmaker).
The Suns outscored their opponents 29-5.
Other Suns scorers were Jeff Conover (3/3, hat trick), Travis Amick (4/1), Michael Connor (1/4, playmaker), Jason Heiner (0/5), Danny Ward (1/3), Max Kwok (1/2) and Matt Alloway (0/2). Also skating were Brandon Brocklebank, Kyle Cole and Blake King.
Getting better each week, Sun Valley competes in the Midget (ages 15-18) state tournament Feb. 25-26 in Boise and the Tier II regional tournament at Denver, Colo. March 9-12.
