The sixth-grade Sun Valley Storm girls' basketball team played for the championship at the 26th annual Idaho Youth Ranch basketball tournament this past weekend.
The Storm played a rematch against a Twin Falls team for the championship, after losing to them in the first round by three points. Storm came out victorious in their second match-up against Twin Falls team with a last-second 3-point shot by team Most Valuable Player Kaitana Martinez.
This win forced a third match-up between the two teams to claim the championship. But the Storm lost the final game and finished the tournament in second place.
Coached by Bruce Bowers, Storm beat Jerome and Minico to advance to the championship. Tough inside rebounding and scoring by Elizabeth Fry and Cheyenne Swanson kept the team strong inside the key.
Amber Lewis and Jonnie Pederson contributed offensive baskets and strong defense. Natasha Guzman wouldn't let anyone past her defensively. Aggressive play by Megan Morrell and Haille Taylor kept their opponents stymied.
Excellent ball control, shooting, and speed by guards Kaitana and Tristin Bowers rounded off this incredibly balanced team. The Storm plays in the Magic Valley League tournament this weekend.
