Sempra opponents rally against plant

By REBECCA MEANY

While some power plant-related bills languish in the Idaho Senate, residents opposed to the construction of Sempra's proposed coal-fired power plant are working the grassroots angle.

Citizens from several Magic Valley groups will have a booth at the Southern Idaho Home & Garden Show this weekend in Twin Falls, collecting petition signatures and handing out information.

The Home and Garden show is at the College of Southern Idaho Expo Center Friday through Sunday.

Members of opposition groups are on stand-by for a trip to the state Capitol Monday for a hearing on Sen. Clint Stennett's mercury-cap bill.

The bill, labeled S1293, would keep Idaho's mercury emissions cap at near zero. The bill is assigned to the Senate Health & Welfare Committee, and Stennett, D-Ketchum, hoped it would be scheduled for a public hearing following this week's mercury presentations by the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality and the Department of Health & Welfare.

The public hearing had not been confirmed by the Mountain Express' deadline.
