Grants available for valley groups

New charitable foundation pools resources

Wood River Valley organizations may apply for grants of $5,000 to $25,000 from the newly formed Wood River Valley Women's Charitable Foundation.

There will be a two-part application process, according to Marcia Liebich, grants chairwoman. Applicants first are asked to fill out a two-page form available on the group's Web site at www.wrwomen.org by March 1.

A committee will then request more detailed proposals from selected organizations, make site visits, and present several recommendations to the membership. The membership will vote on the grant recipients in early June, and the money will be awarded in late June or early July.

The foundation, formed last year, has 60 members who pledge to donate $1,000 a year. Half of each donation goes to a charity of the member's choice and the remaining $500 is pooled to make a grant that will have a significant impact on community needs. This year's grants will be the first made by the organization.

For additional information, contact Liebich at 578-8004 or grants@wrwomen.org Persons interested in joining the group should contact info@wrwomen.org.

The group's mission is "to inspire and educate women to become leaders in philanthropy while bringing significant, positive change to the community by pooling our members' resources."

"We hope that by pooling funds, we will be able to have a greater impact than we could as individuals," Liebich said.

Categories for grants include economic and basic needs, education, environment, health, cultural arts and recreation. A recent membership survey showed that top priorities are economic and basic needs, education and health, she added, although organizations in any of the categories are eligible for grants.

Financial administration is provided by the Idaho Community Foundation, a statewide nonprofit organization composed of more than 300 individual funds, pooled together for efficient management. Total assets are approximately $54 million.

ICF attracts assets from a wide range of donors within and outside the state of Idaho. It manages and invests its assets primarily as permanent endowment. Return from the endowment is distributed to charitable organizations as grants aimed at enriching life's quality throughout Idaho. Since its inception in 1988, ICF has made charitable distributions totaling more than $23 million. The Idaho Community Foundation encourages citizens to join as members to help support statewide philanthropic outreach missions. To learn more about the foundation or join as a member, visit ICF's Web site at www.idcomfdn.org or call (800) 657-5357.
