Ilex Trio plus one plays at gallery

Two parts of the Ilex Trio are cellist Anne Fagerburg, and her husband Morris Jacob.

If you are one of those folks who was in bed by 11 p.m. on Dec. 31, the New Year can still be celebrated by listening to lovely music while surrounded by art.

The Sun Valley Summer Symphony's School of Music is hosting a fundraiser 7 o'clock tonight, Jan. 6, at the Gail Severn Gallery in Ketchum. The Ilex Trio from St. Louis will be performing with guest artist, Morris Jacob.

The trio is comprised of cellist Anne Fagerburg, violinist Kristin Ahlstrom and pianist Peter Henderson. Fagerburg's husband Jacob will join them on viola. The musicians are familiar faces in the Wood River Valley as they are all members of the Sun Valley Summer Symphony, as well as the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.

Jacob and Fagerburg are par-time residents in Sun Valley and spend as much time here as their busy schedules allow. Jacob trained at the Cleveland Institute of Music and joined the St. Louis Symphony in 1981. Since coming to St. Louis, he has been very active as a chamber musician and has appeared as a soloist with the St. Louis Symphony and its Youth Orchestra. Fagerburg grew up in a house full of string players. A member of the St. Louis Symphony for 25 years, she plays recitals throughout the United States. She is also a member of the Carmel Quartet, the Ellicott and the resident quartet at École des Beaux Arts in Fountainbleu, France.

While in the valley, Jacob and Fagerburg are conducting Master Classes for students of the School of Music.

They are not the only couple, however. Alhstrom and Peter Henderson complete the foursome. Alhstrom is the associate principal second violin for the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. An avid chamber musician, Alhstrom has appeared many times as a guest artist at the Garth Newel Music Center in Hot Springs, Va., and was a guest artist with the St. Louis Symphony during the current season. Henderson is a former full-time member of the Garth Newel Piano Quartet and participated in the Quartet's inaugural recording of works by Mozart and Brahms. He earned his Doctor of Music degree in piano performance, literature and pedagogy from Indiana University, in Bloomington and is now serving as assistant professor of music at Maryville University in St. Louis.

Reservations for the chamber evening can be made by calling the School of Music at 788-4616 or the Sun Valley Summer Symphony at 622-5607. Admission is $35 for the concert and reception following the concert.
