The snow has piled up along the North Valley Trails system where the annual Prairie Creek Snowmaker classic cross-country ski races will be staged Saturday, Jan. 7.
Sponsoring the popular first-of-the-New Year event are The Elephant's Perch of Ketchum, the Blaine County Recreation District and its North Valley Trails system, and the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation's Junior Nordic ski team.
You must have a NVT pass to participate. Entry fee is $5 per person, which is a donation to the trails system. SVSEF skiers can ski free of charge.
Registration is from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Prairie Creek trailhead 14 miles north of Ketchum along S.H. 75.
The 2-kilometer and 4k kids' races begin at 11 a.m. At 11:15 a.m., the 15k and 7.5k events begin with interval starts—four skiers every minute. The long distance skiers line up first followed by the 7.5k skiers.
Prize drawings will be held afterwards. Finishing times will be recorded and posted at The Perch in Ketchum.
Make sure you car-pool to the Prairie Creek site and park tightly at the trailhead.
Last January there were 62 skiers at three distances in the Prairie Creek Snowmaker event. Winning 15k races were Jon Engen (50:32) and Muffy Ritz (59:22). The 7.5k winners were Conor Davis (26:54) and Devyn Parnes (31:54).
