Airport's snow removal need is phenomenal task

Snowed-in homeowners laboriously clearing their driveways with blowers—cry your eyes out.

Friedman Memorial Airport's two main, giant snow plows—one capable of handling 1,500 tons per hour, the other 3,500 tons—cleared an estimated 5,000 tons of snow per hour from the field's 135 acres of pavement during last week's heavy fall.

Airport Manager Rick Baird and operations manager Pete Kramer reported to the Airport Authority Tuesday night that snow stopped falling around 3 a.m. Friday, Dec. 2, and by shortly after 1 p.m. the airport was open.

Baird told the board the snow plowing is continuous, and that although plows are dealing with as little as 2 inches of accumulated snowfall, the total removed becomes several thousand tons as plows move along the runway and taxiways.
