Rejuvenated with a schedule of 24 games, the Sun Valley Suns men's senior hockey team will open its 31st season of competition this weekend.
The Suns (495-194-29 all-time) will host a first-time opponent, the Park City (Utah) General, on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 9-10 at Sun Valley Skating Center. Opening face-offs are set for 7 p.m. Tickets are $6.
Seventh-year head coach ChrisBenson said current Suns players have 12 to 14 practices under their belts and are antsy to start playing games for real.
He said he's not sure what kind of team Park City will bring, but Benson feels having the General on the schedule is a healthy sign that could mean a home-and-home rivalry within driving distance.
The Suns have home-and-homes planned with traditional rivals Jackson Hole (Wyo.) Moose and McCall Mountaineers, plus a January home clash with a national senior power the New York St. Nicks.
The schedule of 20 home games includes a New Year's weekend clash with McCall Dec. 30-31 followed by three more weekends of home games in January. The annual Past/Future Suns exhibition games are Friday, Dec. 23.
