Post-season honors go to Panther players

Football and volleyball awards

Carey School saluted participants on its 2005 football and volleyball teams during Tuesday's awards program at the Blaine County school.

The Panther football team coached by Lane Kirkland won the Sawtooth Conference West championship and finished with an 8-2 record that included five-game and three-game winning streaks. It was the first Carey football team to exceed 50 points scoring per game.

Senior quarterback Tyler Cook won the Offensive Player Award and junior Cody Baird was top Defensive Player. Most Improved were Bryan Hill and Blake Whitby. The "Trench Digger" and Inspirational Award went to senior Devin Simpson.

Sawtooth Conference All-League awards will be announced next week.

Coach Kathy Whitworth's Carey volleyball squad (29-7) finished second in the Northside Conference and third in the State 1A tournament.

RayAnne Hennefer had Most Assists. Top Serving Percentage went to Jessica Royal. The Best Hitting Percentage and Most Kills awards were presented to Whitney Peck. Brenna Silva had Most Blocks. Most Improved was Amanda Hill.

Athletic director Lee Cook welcomed the sizable audience and principal John Peck provided the concluding remarks. In between, the awards program was eventful and included an appearance by an American soldier just returned from Iraq.

Carey Athletic Association president Jessica Royal welcomed David Wilson, whose brother Dan is a freshman on the Carey football team.

David Wilson signed up for the National Guard when he was 17 and a high school junior living in Iowa. He finished his senior year at Carey High School when his family moved to Idaho. He completed his National Guard basic training in Georgia and then served about 18 months on a church mission to Finland. Wilson was called up to serve in Iraq, and went from Finland to Carey to Iraq.

Wilson served guard duty in Iraq and worked with the Iraqi police on many different patrols. He told Tuesday's listeners that his favorite thing was the Iraqi children.

At Tuesday's awards program, Serene Bingham sang the national anthem and six Panther boys did a musical number. They were Allen Peck, Scott Ellsworth, Nathan Foster, Tyler Parke, Trent Parke and Connor Rivera. Video highlights of the football and volleyball season were a highlight of the evening.
