WRHS boys' soccer team gives out its awards

McCann is top Great Basin midfielder

Parents, fans and friends celebrated some great moments on the soccer pitch Wednesday night when the Wood River High School boys' soccer program held its annual post-season banquet at Rico's in Ketchum.

Coach Farrell Swain's Wood River varsity completed a 14-7-1 campaign during the Oct. 27-29 State 4A tournament in Meridian when the team won its first-ever state tournament game at the 4A level.

Among the honors announced Wednesday was Wood River senior Austin McCann being named "Midfielder of the Year," in the Great Basin Conference West.

Senior Garrett Leo was named team Most Valuable Player for the 2005 season and he also earned the "Goal of the Year" award for his long free kick at the end of regulation time that beat Minico of Rupert 3-2 Oct. 15 on the football field in Hailey.

Best Defender was senior Michael Dale and the Best Attacker was Wood River's leading scorer, junior Carl Jablonski (13 goals). Most Improved was senior Joey Stevenson and Most Inspirational was senior Dixon Mooseau.

Former Wood River boys' varsity coach Brian Daluiso attended the banquet and, as always, presented the Loren Hart Memorial Award. The winner was senior Spencer Flade, who along with Leo fortified the Wolverine defensive midfield.

McCann's "top midfielder" honor was revealed last week. It saluted a player who dominated the all-important position despite being injured half the season. McCann finished with six goals (27 career, #9 all-time) including two of his team's three goals in the State 4A tourney.

Other Great Basin picks were:

The Most Valuable Player was junior Eduardo Anguiano of Burley. Top coach was Wes Nyblade of Burley, fourth in the State 4A tourney.

The Great Basin Conference West tournament champion Burley Bobcats (18-3-1) also took the other top two awards—Offensive MVP was senior Bonifacio Sanchez and Defensive MVP was Burley senior goalkeeper Michael Kelsey.

First-team selections from Wood River were seniors Austin McCann (midfield/forward), co-captain Bryce Newcomb (MF), Garrett Leo (defender), Michael Dale (D) and junior Carl Jablonski (forward).

Named to the first team from Burley were Anguiano, Sanchez, Kelsey, Gabriel Rios and Martin Hernandez; Josh Lloyd, Dallas Garner and Philip Toolson of Minico; Sergio Mendoza and Hakan Kurnaz of Jerome.

Wood River second-team picks were senior co-captain Spencer Cordovano (F) along with fellow seniors Spencer Flade (MF), Bill Dankanyin (D/MF) and Jesse Stark (goalkeeper).

Others on the second team were Nate Gilley, Braxton Greener and Clayson Searle of Burley; Mark Lloyd and Colton Douglass of Minico; Michael Laurian and Giovany Leon of Jerome.

Honorable mention selections from Hailey were juniors Cory Rutkowski (MF/D) and Travis Amick (MF/F). Others were Jesus Alvarez and Kyle Gerratt of Burley; Raul Navarette, Oscar Simental and Bryce Jurgensmeier of Minico; and Josh Nunes of Jerome.
