Girls are off and running on the hardwoods

Carey clips Bobcats 48-17 in debut

Carey senior Brenna Silva breaks for the basket in the Panthers 48-17 season opening win over Clark County at home Wednesday night.

Balanced scoring and a 42-27 rebounding advantage enabled the Carey School Panthers to open their 2005-06 girls' basketball season with a 48-17 non-conference home victory over Clark County Wednesday night.

Seniors Whitney Peck (11 points), Jessica Royal (11 points) and Brenna Silva (10 points) shared the scoring chores for coach Hollis Pincock's Panthers in their 31-point triumph over the Bobcats. Carey led 27-9 at halftime and kept applying pressure.

After sitting out much of the first quarter with foul trouble, point guard Royal (6 steals) heated up in the second period by hitting two of her three 3-pointers. Silva pulled down 6 of her team-high 13 rebounds in the second period alone.

Carey swept the boards frequently as Clark County had trouble finding the hole. Peck added 10 rebounds, Allison Shaffer 6 boards, Royal 4, Amy Olsen 3, Emily Olsen 3 and Cassie Weaver 2. Royal added 9 assists and Amy Olsen had 3 assists.

Other Carey scorers were Lacey Peterson 6 points, Allison Shaffer 6, Amanda Hill 2 points and 3 steals, and Cassie Weaver 2. Senior Whitney Tomlinson (5 points, 7 boards) and junior Kylie Black (6 points, 8 rebounds) topped the Bobcats (0-1).

In the half-time shooting contest, Kade Peterson won a $150 prize for hitting two shots from halfcourt.

Carey (1-0) traveled for a big game at Oakley Thursday night.

After dropping its opener 41-32 at Valley Saturday, Southside pre-season favorite Oakley (1-1) rebounded to overcome Northside Conference contender Richfield 42-41 at home Tuesday night.

Carey resumes action Tuesday, Nov. 29 at home against The Community School Cutthroats.
