WRHS girls collect Great Basin soccer honors

Top coach, player awards to Gvozdas, Driscoll


For a second straight year, the Wood River High School girls' varsity soccer team has earned the lions' share of post-season honors given by the Great Basin Conference West.

Once again selected "Coach of the Year," was Wood River's Greg Gvozdas, who guided the Wolverines to a 15-5-2 record, an undefeated Great Basin West mark and fourth place in the State 4A soccer tourney.

Earning conference "Player of the Year," honors for the second consecutive year was senior striker Margii Driscoll. She scored a school single-season record of 43 goals and tallied at least one goal in 16 of 22 Wolverine games this season.

Wood River, which scored 105 goals, second-best in school annals, placed five players on the Great Basin first team, five players on the second team and three were honorable mention in balloting Monday.

First-team selections were forward Driscoll, juniors Calley Brown (midfield/defense), Kacie Femling (MF/D) and Brianna Hull-Mullins (MF/D), and freshman Sam Johnson (F).

Second-team picks were junior Kaitlin Gasenica (MF/F), sophomore Caiti Leo (goalkeeper), sophomores Michelle McMurdo (D) and Kallie Skahill (D), and freshman Aimee Evans (MF).

Earning honorable mention were senior captain Nicole Schulz (MF) along with juniors Ellen Ard (F/GK) and Alexa Turzian (MF).

Gvozdas along with assistant coaches Rob Butterfield and Doug Stouffer announced the awards Wednesday night during Wood River's annual post-season banquet at Rico's in Ketchum.

Selected as the varsity Top Defender was Kacie Femling. Top Goal Scorer was Margii Driscoll. Most Improved was Alexa Turzian. Special Awards of recognition went to Danielle Smith and Kaitlyn Farrington.
