Fury debuts 3-1 at Boise skatefest

Sun Valley women place second

Three victories and a championship game appearance turned out to be a promising start to the 2005-06 ice hockey season for the Sun Valley Fury women Nov. 4-6 in Boise.

With balanced scoring among its 11-player roster, Fury placed second in the Women's "B" Division of the Harvest Classic tournament on the Idaho Ice World sheet. The Utah Shadows defeated Fury 7-0 in the Nov. 6 title contest.

Coach Chris Edwards complemented the Fury for enthusiastic effort all weekend.

"The championship game was against our new nemesis from Utah and we know we'll see them again," Edwards said. "We'll keep working at practice with them in mind."

Fury outscored its opponents 13-12 led by Bege Reynolds (4 goals), Jeannie Kiel (2), Jini Griffith (2), Kelley Sinnott (2) and Dotty Sarchett (2). Goalie Joanie Whitcomb was very busy in the championship game, facing 32 Utah shots.

Sun Valley opened its four-game quest with a 4-2 triumph over the Harvest Hell Raisers. Griffith broke a 1-1 tie with a second-period goal on a pass from Kiel, then Reynolds and Kiel added third-period scores for a 4-1 cushion. Fury out-shot the Hell Raisers 20-13.

Fury continued its strong offensive attack, out-shooting the Provo Blades 30-16 in a 4-2 victory Saturday morning. Casey Mills (Sarchett) and Reynolds (unassisted) scored for a 2-2 tie with the Blades after one period. Reynolds tallied the eventual game winner early in period three on a pass from Mills. Sarchett provided an insurance goal. Goalie Whitcomb stopped all nine Blades shots in the final two periods.

Reynolds, Kiel, Sarchett, Sinnott and Griffith scored singles in Fury's 5-1 victory over Boise Hericanes that put Sun Valley into Sunday's championship contest. But Utah Shadows was too tough by a 7-0 final score in the title game.

Completing the Fury roster were Kelli Kerns, Kris Josey, Heidi Ottley and Mia Edsall.
