Northside names volleyball All-Stars

Two from Carey are All-State picks


Two-time State 1A prep volleyball champion Shoshone (33-2) dominated the 2005 Northside Conference All-Star volleyball team with three first-team selections and a total of five picks on the 23-member squad.

State third-place Carey (29-7) and state qualifier Dietrich also had a good year, with six selections apiece. It was a strong year for Northside seniors—with 21 of the 23 All-Conference picks being 12th graders.

Carey seniors Whitney Peck, Jessica Royal and Amy Olsen made the second team. Community School sophomore Amaya Ingram was the only sophomore on the squad, earning honorable mention status.

Here is the complete list, ranked in order by total points:

All-Northside first team: Katie Strunk and Hailey Harris (Shoshone seniors), Beth McLam (Camas County senior), Caitlin Dill and Kasi McCowan (Dietrich seniors) and Kallie Axelson (Shoshone senior).

Second team: Kyli Astle (Shoshone senior), Halee Kast (Bliss senior), Whitney Peck, Jessica Royal and Amy Olsen (Carey seniors) and Denise Anderson (Dietrich senior).

Honorable mention: Amaya Ingram (Community School sophomore), Nicki Miller (Dietrich senior), Dani Bozzuto (Shoshone senior), Kellie Whittacker (Dietrich senior), RayAnne Hennefer and Lacey Peterson (Carey seniors), Michell Elliott (Bliss senior), Rose Schwarzbach and Kandace Boggs (Camas County senior and junior), Brenna Silva (Carey senior) and Mayda Auker (Dietrich senior).

All-State 1A players named

Head coaches of the eight teams that entered the final two days of the 2005 State 1A volleyball tournament in Lewiston Oct. 27-29 have released the balloting for first- and second- All-State tournament teams.

State champion Shoshone placed three on the first team and Carey had two on the second team—Whitney Peck and Jessica Royal. The picks:

First team: Katie Strunk (Shoshone 5-8 senior middle blocker), Hailey Harris (Shoshone 5-6 senior outside hitter), Kyli Astle (Shoshone 5-7 senior middle blocker), Lisa Davis (Genesee 5-7 senior setter), Kelsie Gartner (Genesee 5-8 sophomore middle blocker) and Juliana Sobczyk (Genesee 5-10 sophomore opposite).

Second team: Whitney Peck (Carey 5-6 senior outside hitter), Jessica Royal (Carey 5-6 senior outside hitter), Hannah Nyrop (Kootenai 5-11 sophomore outside hitter), Megan Skow (Genesee 5-8 junior middle blocker), Darcy Collins (Kootenai 5-8 senior outside hitter) and Kallie Axelson (Shoshone 5-3 senior setter).

Honorable mention: Kaitlin Cramer and Cassie Jones of Genesee; Michelle True and Jordan Emerson of Cole Valley Christian; Cassie Scheffelmaier of Kootenai; Sydney McKelvey of Mackay; Caryn Renfro and Sharsti Goff of Horseshoe Bend.
