Snake River shuts out Cutthroat boys

Snake River 6, The Community School 0

Snake River of Moreland proved too much too handle for the Community School boys' soccer team in the opening round of the State 3A tournament Thursday morning, as the Cutthroats were blanked 6-0.

"We were asleep out there and we didn't defend well," said Cutthroat head coach Richard Whitelaw. "But it was a good learning experience for us."

The Cutthroats kept even with the Panthers through most of the first half, but when Aby Ibarra scored 21 minutes into the game, the floodgates opened. Ryan Murdock scored just before the break to give the Panthers a 2-0 at the half.

The Panthers Brock Turpin led the defensive effort.

The Cutthroats "Man of the Match" was Travis Stone.

The Community School came into the tournament with high hopes after an emotional 3-2 overtime win against then unbeaten Bliss Oct. 19.

Snake River (9-4-2 beat South Fremont 4-3 (2 OT) in a 3-1 penalty kick shootout to earn a trip to the state tournament.

The Community School (9-8-2) now faces Bonners Ferry-which pushed defending state champions McCall-Donnelly into double overtime before losing 2-1-in the opening round of the consolation bracket.

In other action, American Falls beat Bliss 4-3, and Middleton triumphed 3-1 over North Fremont.

Middleton, last year's third-place finisher, barely lost 1-0 (2 OT) to McCall-Donnelly in the Third District title game.

Middleton may get a shot at redemption in the title game if they beat American Falls and McCall gets past Snake River.
