Girls blank Diggers

Community School 3, Sugar-Salem 0

The Community School girls' soccer team got off to a strong start in the first round of the State 3A tournament with a 3-0 shutout over Sugar-Salem, of Sugar City, Thursday morning in Boise.

With the win, the Cutthroats are assured a top four finish in the eight-team tournament. This is the Cutthroats fifth straight appearance in the state tournament.

Sophomore Cutthroat Cody Curran sparked the scoring with a long goal ten minutes into the first half.

Sara Berman, a junior, scored 12 minutes later to give the Cutthroats a 2-0 lead at the half.

The Cutthroats (9-6) and Diggers, the Sixth District runner-up, played scoreless soccer through most of the second half before sophomore Chloe Lynn sunk a goal with just 30 seconds remaining.

"It's always great to get the first game out of the way in a state tournament," Community School head coach Kelly Feldman said after the game. "We got the job done ... we also were able to get everybody into the game."

Sophomore goalie Jean Montgomery was credited with the shutout-her fourth in as many games. The Cutthroats have outscored opponents 20-0 over that period.

The Community School now faces arguably the toughest team in the tournament, Payette, which blanked St. Maries 11-0 in the opening round. That game will be played today.

In other action, Teton of Driggs remained undefeated (16-0-2) with a 3-1 win over Marsh Valley Thursday morning. Two-time defending state champs American Falls squeaked by Middleton 2-1.
