In a showdown between the top two boys' soccer teams in the Northside conference Wednesday afternoon, Bliss bettered the Community School with a 3-2 win to remain undefeated in the league.

"They deserved to win this," Cutthroats head coach Richard Whitelaw said Wednesday night. "Collectively, we had a few breakdowns and made crucial mistakes at the wrong time.

"When you do that, good teams will punish you."

Bliss got off to a quick start, scoring the games first two goals. The Cutthroats Wes Flanigan, a senior, and junior Alden Remington struck back with the game's next two goals to tie the score in the second half. But the Bears struck last to seal the victory, Whitelaw said.

"They were certainly psyched up, it was their homecoming," Whitelaw said, adding that "Man of the Match" honors went to senior Ross Campbell.

The Cutthroats hosted Minico Thursday and have today off before traveling to Hailey on Saturday to face Wood River in a non-conference grudge match.

"It's always an emotional deal, and they're strong and at home," Whitelaw said about the Wolverines (8-3-1, 5-0 league).

The two teams didn't play last year, but have met 51 times over 21 seasons, with Wood River leading the series 30-18-3 (17-4-2 in Hailey). The Cutthroats and Wolverines met four times in 2003, with Wood River taking all four matches.

"We've had some good games over the years and it usually comes down to who wants to win the most," Whitelaw said. "Certainly this year they will be heavily favored.

"It's all about bragging rights."
