Panthers, Miners put unbeaten boasts on the line

Carey (5-0) travels to Mackay tonight

Carey and Mackay have waged some memorable games on the basketball court, but the two tiny central Idaho high schools haven't met on the gridiron—mainly because Mackay was 11-man until 2003.

That will change tonight, Wednesday when #2-ranked Carey (5-0) and top-ranked Mackay (5-0) put their undefeated boasts on the line for a 7 p.m. Sawtooth West vs. East eight-man game at Mackay.

Both Division 2 teams are used to winning big this fall.

Carey has outscored its five opponents 272-72 (54.4 points per game) while Mackay is 260-98 (52.0 ppg) better than its opponents so far this season.

The Miners, who won a tough 36-34 battle at reigning State 1A Division 1 king Raft River back on Sept. 9, are 15-1 over two seasons including their 42-14 loss to Horseshoe Bend in the 2004 State 1A Division 2 championship game.

Carey coach Lane Kirkland said, "Mackay is tall, big and fairly athletic. Their quarterback (junior Kelvin Krosch) is 6-6. And their top runner (senior Matt Tillotson) is shifty and fast—went to state in the 200m dash. We'll have to key on him.

"They average 200 to 210 pounds. They're oversized compared to us. We're going to have to tackle and gang-tackle and hang on. We can't miss anything. But I think we can move the ball on them because being small and quick like we are can cause some problems."

A prolific scorer, Tillotson scored four touchdowns in Friday's 46-0 Mackay win over the Sho-Ban Chiefs. And senior Levi Donahue is a tall receiver for the aerials of Krosch.

"The game is a big test to see what we're made of. We may have to play Mackay again down the line," said Kirkland referring to a possible State 1A Division 2 playoff match-up.

Carey will enter the game off its 50-0 mercy-rule Sawtooth Conference West victory over a depleted Richfield team Friday. Cody Baird scored a pair of TDs while Connor Rivera, Tyler Cook, Allen Peck, Blake Whitby and Jake Stewart added single scores for the Panthers.
