Wood River junior midfielder Kaitlin Gasenica scores the game's first goal against Century in Hailey on Wednesday. The Diamondbacks beat the Wolverines 3-2.

In what may have been a preview of the 4A state championship, Century and Wood River played an eternity of scoreless soccer before scoring five goals in the games final 23 minutes in Hailey Tuesday afternoon.

The Diamondbacks edged Wood River 3-2.

Century, ranked No. 1 in the state, scored three goals in the game's final 15 minutes to retain their perfect record.

"They're fairly skilled, well organized, and they play hard," Wood River head coach Greg Gvozdas said after the game. "At this point we have to step up to that. But we're fairly evenly matched."

Wood River, ranked third in the state with a 4-1-1 record, got on the board first when junior midfielder Kaitlin Gasenica dribbled through the Diamondbacks defense and banked a shot off the right post for a goal.

Century's Liz Wahl answered with two goals in less than ten minutes, one of them a bomb from the right sideline that beat Wolverines goalie Catie Leo.

But Wood River didn't roll over.

With about five minutes remaining in the game, Wolverines senior forward Margii Driscoll created her own highlight clip, dribbling right and shooting left to tie the score at 2-2.

But the Diamondbacks freshman sensation, Shailee Smith, beat Leo with three minutes remaining to put her team up for good.

Gvozdas said his defense needs to play with more speed, but also with more patience.

"They're diving in too much," he said. "We've got to be more defensively sound ... we need to play a bit quicker."

He added that while Leo let in three goals, "she made some big saves."

The sophomore goalie, who's starting for her first time this season, is "improving game by game," he added.

Kacie Femling, Kaitlyn Farrington, and Alexa Turzian all played well, Gvozdas said.

Wood River travels to Jerome today for a 4:30 kickoff.
