One more shot at tennis over Labor Day

Tennis players came out for one final shot at carefree summer tennis last weekend during a sun-splashed four-day Labor Day tournament at Warm Springs Tennis Club.

Steve Schwanke of Seattle and Hadley DeBree of Ketchum captured the top-flight singles divisions.

Repeating as Men's Open doubles champs were Boise State University tennis mates Luke "Bazooka" Shields, a sophomore from Grand Junction, Colo., and Ehren Vaughan, a Bronco senior from Rock Valley, NSW Australia.

There were 52 singles players in five classes and 57 doubles teams in 10 classes. The four-day holiday meet was sponsored by Chandler's and Baci restaurants, Atkinsons' and Warm Springs Tennis.

Here are top results from the holiday tournament:

Singles

Men's 5.0/4.5 final: Steve Schwanke of Seattle 6-1, 6-4 over Payton Aarestad of Ontario, Ore. (6 players).

Men's 4.0 final—Top-seeded Glenn Luke of Boise 6-1, 6-1 over #3-seeded Phil Ellis of Jerome.

Semi-finals: Luke 6-4, 7-6 (8) over Max Sabel; and Ellis 6-4, 7-6 (2) over #2-seeded John Perry of Boise (17 players).

Men's 3.5 final—Bill Hull of Pocatello won four matches in straight sets including the 7-5, 7-5 final over Hugh Stewart (13 players).

Women's 4.5/4.0 final—Unseeded Hadley DeBree 6-2, 6-1 over #2-seeded Anna Chrysikopoulos.

Semi-finals: Hadley DeBree 7-5, 6-3 over top-seeded Lily Fink-DeBray; and Chrysikopoulos 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 over Carmen Alvarado (8 players).

Women's 3.5/3.0 final—Helena Goodwin of Glenns Ferry won three matches in straight sets including the 6-2, 6-1 final over Charlotte Alexander (8 players).

Doubles

Men's Open final: Keeping their Men's Open doubles from the 2004 Labor Day tournament were Luke Shields of Grand Junction, Colo. and Ehren Vaughan of Australia 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 over Mark Scribner and Dar Walters of Boise (5 teams).

Men's 5.0 final: 1—Scooter Sabel and Max Sabel. 2—Steve Schwanke of Seattle and Dave Taylor. In their head-to-head meeting, the Sabels captured a hard-fought 4-6, 7-6 (0), 7-6 (13-11) victory (3-team round robin).

Men's 4.0 final: #2-seeded Phil Ellis of Jerome and Rob Welch of Twin Falls 6-3, 7-5 over unseeded Dan Hunt and L.R. Williams.

Semi-final: Hunt-Williams defeated top-seeded Kent Laverty and Glenn Luke 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 (13 teams).

Men's 3.5 final: Pete Atkinson and Riley Berman 6-4, 6-4 over Dick Barrymore and Jake Jacoby (4 teams).

Women's 4.0 final: Hadley DeBree and Whitney DeBree 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 over Chelsea Cutler and Chelle Gourlay (8 teams).

Women's 3.5 final: Cyndi DuFur and Gretchen Palmer 2-6, 7-6 (6), 7-5 over Shelly Lane and Mila Wood of Boise (5 teams).

Mixed 4.5/5.0 round-robin: 1—Mark Scribner and Hadley DeBree. 2—David Perry and Lily Fink-DeBray. In their head-to-head meeting, Scribner and DeBree won 6-4, 6-4 over Perry and Fink-DeBray (3-team round robin).

Mixed 4.0 final: Max Sabel and Mandy Alexander 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (8) over Paden Jacobsen and Nan Jacobsen of Boise.

Semi-finals: Sabel and Alexander 7-5, 6-4 over Jack Alkire and Karen Heerensperger of Seattle; and Paden Jacobsen and Nan Jacobsen 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 over Rex Chandler and Whitney DeBree (8 teams).

Mixed 3.5 final: Jeff and Chelsea Cutler 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2 over Herb and Charlotte Alexander (8 teams).
