Ketchum's Lars-Erik Johnson (1.20:19 for 19 miles) topped a 1-2-3 Wood River Valley finish in the Pro/Semi-Pro men's class at the 21st annual White Knob Challenge mountain bike race Aug. 6 in Mackay.

Johnson finished 1:23 ahead of runner-up Whitney Albright (1.21:42) and nearly two minutes faster than third-place Billy Olson (1.22:08). In all, there were 141 riders signed up—67 from the Boise area and 35 from the Wood River area.

As always, racers departed Mackay at "high noon," onto a 19-mile course that included 2,300 feet of elevation gain.

Recent road grading in Cliff Creek presented cyclists with a faster course in 2005. However, at the pre-race meeting, riders were cautioned not to get lulled into complacency because a sandy layer on top made the "smoother" section deceiving.

The Mackay EMTs, as they have for years, provided excellent support with three EMTs on ATVs. The EMTs also arranged for water stations—a critical support issue with temperatures hovering around 100 degrees.

One rider in the NORBA classic suffered a broken collarbone. Several didn't finish due to mechanical issues.

One rider was disqualified for riding across the one bridge on the course. The bridge is on private land and the landowner has graciously opened his land each year with one condition—that the White Knob riders dismount and walk or run their bikes across the bridge.

Riders shared a post-race meal prepared by Rodriguez of Bear Bottom Inn.

Sponsored by Intermountain Orthopaedics and organized by Lost River Cycling of Boise, the longest-running mountain bike race in the Northwest was the fifth event in the six-race Knobby Tires Series for 2005.

Next year's White Knob is scheduled for Aug. 5, 2006.
