Bellevue prohibits outdoor watering

Failure of city well forces restrictions

Bellevue residents received notice Thursday, Aug. 4, to turn off their water. The city has prohibited all outdoor and large-use watering because of the failure of a city well.

"This is not threatening domestic safety. People will be able to cook, shower and flush the toilet," City Administrator Tom Blanchard said.

Bellevue's Chantrelle Well failed Thursday morning, interrupting the city water supply. The city immediately prohibited outdoor watering and the use of large amounts of water by commercial businesses. The cause of the failure was not determined by late Thursday afternoon.

"We have three water supplies; two are still functioning. They are not enough to supply our users," Blanchard said.

Blanchard said the city's water supply is now operating at 55 percent of the normal capacity.

Because the cause of the failure has yet to be determined, the city can not determine when operations will return to normal.

Blanchard said Bellevue will be able to continue to provide water for domestic uses for some time, but the city may have to explore alternative ways to provide water to large-scale commercial users.
