Marcroft is national champion at 50k

Tahoe Rim Trail test

Bellevue's Kitty Marcroft returned to the site of one of her greatest triumphs July 16 and earned a national honor in the Tahoe Rim Trail 50-kilometer (31-mile) trail run in the California mountains.

Marcroft, 43, won the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) national championship in the Women's Masters division by finishing the 50k event in six hours, two minutes and 12 seconds—good for 10th place overall out of 183 finishers.

She was second among the 66 female finishers, running behind sixth-place overall Julie Young, 39, of Auburn, Ca. (5.32:10). The men's winner in an event nicknamed "A Glimpse of Heaven, A Taste of Hell," was Paul South, 31, of Louisville, Colo. (4.37:25).

Runners ages 24-71 finished the 50k test, and another 89 did the 50-mile Tahoe trail event presented by Tahoe Mountain Milers and Sagebrush Stompers running clubs.

Two years ago, Marcroft (9.50:44) was ninth overall and the winning woman in the Tahoe Rim Trail 50-mile trail run held July 19, 2003. The 2004 Tahoe Rim Trail runs were canceled due to wildfire.
