Fishing Report

by Bill Mason

Not much has changed over the past week, because water levels still remain higher than I'd like to see for this time of year. Temperatures will be quite warm. That may shift much of our fishing activity into morning and evening hours. Let's have a look at what we have and what to expect:

· SILVER CREEK—Not much change. At times, Beatis spinners have been quite heavy and our Mason Quill Beatis Spinner #22 has been quite effective. The Pale Morning Duns have been sparse throughout the day but could be very strong in the evening. PMD Parachutes #18 and Cut-wing Parachutes should work. I would also begin looking for Callibeatis Spinners in the sloughs and floating section. A Partridge Spinner #16 takes fish nicely in the early afternoon. You might begin to see a few Trico but it's still about a week away from hatching in any quantity. Blue Damselflys could also be a good bet in the afternoon.

· BIG WOOD RIVER—Gradually dropping, but it's still carrying a lot of water so you have to pick your spots carefully and wade with caution.

Unfortunately, we did have some good success with the Green Drake but because of high water, I think we missed more then we got. We are reaching that time when the Drakes should begin to disappear but hopefully we can get another week out of it. I would continue to throw Green Drake patterns along with Stimulators, Para Adams and Para Hares Ears #12-14. Because the Cream Duns of E. deceptive are also seen, a Yellow Para Adams #14-16 has also been working. Prince Nymphs #10-12 will also take fish. Finally, because of the hot weather, Caddis in the evening should begin to get heavy. Partridge Caddis and Olive Stimies #14 should work.

· BIG LOST—Still too high to really fish effectively. This situation includes the Copper Basin or East Fork. You can give it a try but I'm not sure it's worth a set of tires. The road is still deadly so if you don't have six- or eight-ply tires, you better be careful and take your time.

· WARM SPRINGS/TRAIL CREEK—Warm Springs has been fishing quite nicely throughout most of the sections. Para Adams #14, Stimulators #14-16, Para Hares Ear #14 and Prince Nymphs #12, all seem to be working. Although we have not fished Trail Creek, I suspect it should be coming into shape and begin to be productive.

· PENNY LAKE/LAKE CREEK—Because of the high water, it's still the best place to take kids fishing. Bait and spinners are the most effective and Parachute Adams seems to work well for the fly fishermen.
