Lefty's gears up in Park City

Men's and women's soccer teams on the road

The Lefty's Bar & Grill men's soccer team and the Laurent Perrier Sun Valley women's team traveled to Utah last weekend for the seventh annual Park City soccer tournament.

It was the opening tournament for the women and still an early-season outing for the Lefty's men.

Early rustiness showed for both teams, though the men finished with three wins and only one loss to finish second in their group of four.

Lefty's season record stands at four wins and three losses.

Ketchum's Olin Glenne, Lefty's team director, said the tournament "was a good tune-up," for upcoming matches in Jackson and at home.

Lefty's dropped the Park City opener 4-0 to Lazio, a Salt Lake City team that played a combination of BYU and Westminster College players. "We just came out flat," said Glenne of the loss.

From there, Lefty's found a bit of its old stride in a 3-1 win over Park City United. Ciro Lima, Sam Ajir and Erik Hall each found the net, Hall on a header.

Having gained momentum, Lefty's captured its third game 4-1 over La Roca Negra as Lima scored twice with additional goals from Josh Stanek and Jason Southward.

Glenne played goal for most of the weekend with some help from Luke Fostvedt

Glenne singled out defender Rob Butterfield as the Lefty's MVP because he "just shut down whoever he was put on."

Also on defense, Glenne noted that Shaun Kelly kept defense organized at sweeper.

The team had a few players drop out of the Park City trip last minute, which hurt them, said Glenne. "Early tournaments are tough to do well in," he said, adding, "We will be ready for Jackson."

Lefty's will play its next game at home against the Magic Valley Warriors on the Atkinson Park lower field in Ketchum on Tuesday, July 19. The team travels to Jackson Hole for a July 23-24 tournament before hosting the 27th annual Ketchum Classic soccer tournament Aug. 6-7.

Ketchum women in Utah

As for the women's Laurent Perrier team, team director Siobhan Sutton said it was a tough opening weekend. Her team dropped all three games at Park City.

"We had no goalie," said Sutton, explaining how teammates simply rotated at netminder. Sun Valley dropped two games 6-0 to Park City and Jackson. In the championship, Logan won 1-0 over Yo Play.

Sutton felt that the Laurent Perrier team, composed of players of varying ages and skill levels—"We have people who are just learning and college players and moms," she said—will pull it together in upcoming tournaments.

Park City was the first time Laurent Perrier played as a team this year. "Hopefully we'll get some more of our old players back," said Sutton.

In the meantime, the team is welcoming any and all interested female athletes to practice and play. Practices are held once a week Monday evenings at Atkinson Park.

Call Sutton at 720-4473 for more information.

The women travel to Jackson Hole for the July 23-24 tournament and then host the Sun Valley women's soccer tournament Aug. 13-14.

"We give away champagne at the home tournaments, so I think people like it," she said.
