Fishing Report

by Bill Mason

The good news is that many of our expected hatches are holding off, for the most part. What is seen, is only a small trickle. It's still a guess as to when the rivers will drop to have effective fishing—and that's the bad news. Maybe by the end of the week things will improve so let's take a look at what to expect.

· SILVER CREEK—Things are pretty much the same on the creek—a little bit of this and a little bit of that. No hatches stand out. A few Pale Morning Duns, some Callibeatis and some tiny Beatis, make up what you might see on the water. The problem is, you have got to be prepared for all just in case. PMD Parachutes and Cripples #18, Thorax Callibeatis Duns, Cripples and Speckled Spinners #16 and tiny Beatis Spinners and Emergers #22 will all work at various times, depending upon what hatch decides to show. Beatles, Ants and Blue Damselfly patterns are also effective. Finally, the most effective method in taking fish is with nymphs, using Flashback Pheasant Tails #14, Hares Ear's #14 and PMD Nymphs #16.

· BIG WOOD RIVER—A very tough call. Water levels through the weekend did not drop which made the fishing spotty. It's very clear, we are still in on the cusp or transition period and hopefully by the end of the week, things will explode Thankfully, the hatches are holding off or at least not being seen in any quantity to cause concern. As a result the upcoming fishing could be great.

The Green Drake, Golden Stones and the Western Quill are what were looking for and the like patterns that should be carried for success. Our new Rubber Legged Green Drake, Hair Winged G.D. and Crippled G.D. #10-12, as well as big Yellow Simulators #8 and Parachute Hares Ear #12-14, should do the job on the surface, if and when the water drops. Bead Head and Regular Prince Nymphs #10-12, Green Drake Nymphs #10 and Rubber Legged Golden Stones #8 are still very effective and are consistently taking fish throughout.

The Wood is coming, just have some patience.

· BIG LOST—Last weekend, we ran a guide trip over there at a client's insistence and all that they got was a lot of windshield time. At over 700 cfs, it's just too much water to fish in or on. Hell, there is more water coming in to the reservoir then going out. Haven't heard or seen that situation in a few years.

· WARM SPRINGS/TRAIL CREEK—Reports have been real sketchy. Some places have been decent will most other river sections have yielded nothing. Once again, water levels will dictate. We both drop, Para Adams #12-14, Yellow Stimulators, Elk Hair Caddis #14-16 Para Hares Ear #14-16, Yellow Para Adams and Prince Nymphs, should produce some fish.

· PENNY LAKE/LAKE CREEK—As usual for this time of year, both are heavily stocked and a good safe place to take kids, using bait, spinners and flies.
