Hailey's Vicky Johnston had command of her formidable tennis weapons including a blazing backhand Monday during the Open mixed doubles title match of the 19th annual Warm Springs Open tourney.

Johnston, teaming up with Warm Springs pro David Perry of Jerome for the first time in doubles, put down the hammer with a backhand at the net to finish a 7-6 (2), 7-5 victory over top-seeded Lauren Drew and Mark Scribner in the finale.

It was a finale that carried some weight, since Scribner and Perry are established local stars in singles and doubles, and Drew has been a first-team all-conference player for Scripps College in California.

But Johnston was the pivotal player and she showed determination throughout the tight match. A Boise State University college star from 1988-92, Johnston shared the 4.5/5.0 women's doubles title at last year's Fourth of July holiday tourney in Ketchum.

The Open mixed doubles championship was a feature match on the final day of the four-day tournament sponsored by Sturtevants of Sun Valley and Warm Springs Tennis Club. There were 81 singles entries and 80 doubles teams in the combined 22 classes.

Hailey resident Lauren Drew won women's Open singles and the men's Open singles winner was Robert Devens of San Francisco, Ca. In women's Open doubles, the winners in straight sets were Lauren Drew and her partner Katie Sanders of Ketchum.

Next up at Warm Springs Tennis Club, with a similar non-sanctioned format, is the 2005 Labor Day tournament Sept. 2-5. All entries must be received by Monday, Aug. 29.

Here are top results from last weekend's holiday meet:
