Legion splits twinbill with Shelley

Hailey drops opener 5-2, trounces Shelley 19-1 in nightcap

The Wood River American Legion baseball squad continued its summer trend last Thursday evening in Hailey.

Coach Eli Lloyd's Wranglers dropped a tough first game then exploded offensively in the second for a series split in Area C "A" Legion action on the Founders Field diamond.

Shelley won the first game 5-2 but Wood River (11-10, 5-7 league) came back to capture the nightcap by a 19-1 score.

Wood River scored eight runs in the first and third innings to avoid a sweep.

"In the second game, we looked like an accomplished ball club," Lloyd said. "But we've done that three or four times this year—lose the first and the run-rule teams in the second game."

Second baseman Drew Anderson (3-for-3, 3 runs) continued heating up at the plate for Wood River. He started the six-hit, eight-run first stanza with a single and finished it with a three-run triple.

The next eight-run outburst, in the third, got going with three hit batsmen. Left fielder Pat Patterson (2 hits, 3 runs) made it hurt when he cleared the bases with a three-run triple and scored on Anderson's RBI single for a 19-1 cushion.

Jimmy Pierson collected two hits in four trips to the plate, with a double and three runs scored. Leadoff hitter Tyler Israel (3 runs) did his job, while center fielder Casey Hawkes (2 runs, 3 RBI) added three hits and Eric Jacobson scored three times for the winning team.

On the hill, veteran Tyler Thiede (2-2) tossed a five-inning, one-run, three-hitter to pick up his second win of the summer campaign. He struck out seven Shelley batters.

"Tyler had a dominating performance," Lloyd said. "He had a lot of Ks and was always ahead on the count. He's really coming along on the mound."

Hawkes (1-1) took the ball in game one, his first pitching league start of the summer. Surrendering seven hits and five runs, he struck out seven Shelley batters as well, keeping the Wolverines within striking distance.

"Casey threw well, although he didn't quite get the defensive support he needed," Lloyd said. "We were a little lax at the plate—we had only two hits going into the sixth inning."

Shelley collected two runs in both the second and third innings to get in front of the home team. However, Hawkes shut them down after that, allowing only one run and three hits in the final four frames.

At the plate, Derek Abbott contributed two hits and reached base four times. Thiede laced a double while Anderson and Hawkes added singles to the five-hit attack.

After a Fourth of July weekend break, Wood River picked up its schedule yesterday against Highland of Pocatello at Founders Field in Hailey.

This coming Friday and Saturday the Wranglers pack up and head to eastern Idaho for twinbills against Hillcrest and Idaho Falls on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
