Blaine County track and field athletes carried away 11 gold medals and generally improved their finishing times and lengthened their throwing and jumping distances Saturday when the 2005 State Hershey meet was staged in Hailey.

Relays were particularly good to Blaine County kids. They won five of the six relays. Over the course of the morning, 42 events were contested.

For the second time, the city of Hailey hosted the State Hershey track and field meet at Homer Field. Nearly 200 young Idaho athletes ages 9-14 competed in the meet.

Winners in each state event were eligible to earn all-expense-paid, four-day trips to the 28th annual North American Hershey Finals in August at Hershey, Pa. But the identity of those athletes going to Pennsylvania won't be known for a while.

Summing up, Blaine County athletes did well on a sunny morning.

Gold medalists in the 9-10 age category were Angelica Zarate of Carey (400-meter dash) and Jon Paris of Hailey (400m).

Hailey's K.J. Savaria and Carey's Austin Hennefer were close behind with second places in the 50m and 100m dashes. Drew Barsch of Hailey was second in the 400m dash.

Gold medal relay winners from Hailey in the 9-10 class were the girls' 4x100m squad of Jillian Shay, Catherine Henry, Olivia Roche and Kinzie Bailey, and the boys' 4x100m team of K.J. Savaria, Drew Barsch, Cooper Bailey and Jon Paris.

Hailey's Kaitana Martinez won the girls' 800m run in the 11-12 year old class and placed second in a very close softball throw competition. She anchored the winning 4x100m relay with Morgan Brimstein, Brooke Bowers and Tristin Bowers.

Caleb Cenarrusa of Carey took home the gold in the boys' 11-12 softball throw. The winning 4x100m relay in the 11-12 boys' class came from Hailey—Ian Keys, Tommy Bailey, Connor Braatz and Colton Larkin. Carey's Shane Bingham finished second in the boys' 400m dash.

Throwing the softball was good for Blaine County in the 13-14 class.

Carey's Shelby Hansen won the girls' event at 117-0 and Juan Martinez of Wood River Middle School captured the boys' softball throw with a 166-0 toss, fully 25 feet farther than his winning throw at the May 7 county track meet in Carey.

Second places went to Candace Hennefer of Carey in the softball throw and Taylor Whitby of Carey in the 200m dash, while Trevor Peck of Carey and Juan Martinez picked up seconds in the 800m and 1600m distance runs, respectively.

Achieving one more relay victory for the home teams was the Carey foursome of Shelby Hansen, Candace Hennefer, Taylor Whitby and Jenni Murphy in the 4x100m event.

This year's State Hershey meet was sponsored by the Blaine County Recreation District with assistance from Wood River High School athletic director Ron Martinez and volunteers. It was coordinated by the Blaine County School District.
