Cutting horses come to Bellevue

NCHA weekend at Silver Springs

Cutting horses are coming to Silver Springs Ranch arena south of Bellevue this weekend.

The National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) will hold a major show for cutters Friday through Sunday, June 3-5 at Silver Springs. It's the only one sanctioned within Idaho, Utah and Nevada for those dates.

New this year on Saturday afternoon is a crowd-pleasing "Never Won a Buckle," class for entry-level amateur cutters who haven't won an NCHA trophy buckle.

There will be 12 officially sanctioned NCHA classes ranging from novice/amateur to professional.

The show runs from 8 a.m. through the evening, all three days. The public is welcome, free of charge. Local sponsors will display their products on the 112 Price Lane grounds.

A record $10,300 in sponsor money should attract about 400 entries for the regional show produced by the Idaho Cutting Horse Association. Silver Springs is a new venue for a show that used to be staged at Cutters of Idaho in Hailey.

Local competitors to look for include Greg Smith, Nancy Enright, Gina Macdonald, Kevin Coiner, Hazel Thorne, Scott Thorne, Catherine Michaels, Dick Neustaeder, John Blackburn, Charlie Cord, Corneil Therrien, Cindy Mann, Dolly Thacker, Pam Lumley, Erica Dube and Lane Hutchings.

In addition, two youth scholarship classes will be held. Local youth riders include Gabby Sanborne, Ryan Thomas and Austin Keys of Hailey; Taylor Stoecklein and Caitlin Enright of Ketchum; and Ashley Smith, Kade Smith and Sadie Smith of Bellevue.

Caitlin Enright was a top-five finisher at the NCHA World Championships in Texas this past February. Ashley Smith is a past two-time national high school rodeo champion. Kade Smith holds several NCHA championship titles.

Businesses responsible for generous added money and circuit awards include:

Sawtooth Auto, Wells Fargo Bank of Ketchum, Les Schwab Tire Center, Sawtooth Tack & Feed and DryNest Animal Bedding, Sid Erickson DVM, Sawtooth Wood Products, Rue de Shoe and Sawtooth Equine Service.

Ranchers Supply of Picabo, Sutton & Sons Auto Center and Wells Fargo Bank of Ketchum have donated funds to cover the cost of cattle in the Junior and Senior Youth classes, allowing the young cutters to show their horses on fresh cattle at nominal entry fees.
