Do something big and clean

It's a tired old knee-slapper from the Henny Youngman school of standup one-liner slapstick comedy.

"Want to do something big and clean?" it goes. "Then give an elephant a bath." Yuk-yuk.

Now, for those who want to do something seriously big and clean—for themselves and the Wood River Valley—they should join the Clean Sweep project Saturday in Ketchum, Hailey and Bellevue. Volunteers will help spruce up parts of our beautiful valley.

Hordes of like-minded guardians of the wide-open spaces may also engage in litter removal work the same day as part of Salmon River Cleanup Day, which is part of National River Cleanup Week.

Sadly, the American outdoors still attracts the thoughtless who apparently never learned better at home and who sprinkle refuse wherever they go. This is where hardy volunteers with a yen for fresh mountain air and a sense of civic duty come to the rescue, picking up unsightly trash and making our area pleasant to live in or visit.

The Valley Cleanup begins at 9 a.m. at Atkinson Park, Hop Porter Park and Bellevue City Park. The river cleanup will begin at 10 a.m. at Mormon Bend Campground, seven miles down river from Stanley on state Highway 75. Teams will be formed and given area assignments.

What's good for the outdoors is also good for the souls of volunteers, who see our picturesque vistas and neighborhoods rid of unwelcome debris.
