Local coaches to be honored

Carey?s Blaine Tingey, Wood River?s Greg Gvozdas recognized

Good coaches are typically as under appreciated as good mothers.

Fine stewardship does not always produce tangible results such as wins, but it is the subtle intangibles a coach creates, sportsmanship, team unity and self-confidence, that are some of the hallmarks of fine mentoring.

The Fourth District Coaches Association will honor its own at a banquet in Twin Falls Saturday night.

Carey athletic director and science teacher Blaine Tingey will be saluted for 37 years of service in the coaching ranks.

"I was the only coach when I got here in 1968. I coached football, basketball and boys and girls track," Tingey remarked.

Tingey's dedication has not gone unnoticed. Twice he has been named Idaho Athletic Director of the Year, most recently in 2003, and he also has been a champion for the smaller schools in the state, pushing through a separate classification for the smaller 1A schools at the state track meet.

"Before we had to run against the bigger schools. It was just A-3 and A-4. As president of the Northside Conference I worked on that for two or three years," Tingey said.

Not only did other's children benefit from Tingey's guidance, but his four sons have as well.

Brad Tingey still holds the all-time scoring record in basketball with 1,608 points. Brother Tim is second on the all-time points list with 1,345 and holds the record for most points scored in a game with 54.

When asked what his proudest accomplishment at the helm of the Panther program Tingey replied, "Probably just teaching at Carey and seeing the kids progress. The attributes and things they learned as athletes and students have carried on throughout the years and made them better citizens and people."

Lane Kirkland, the Carey football coach and girls' track coach, was also asked to attend the banquet.

Greg Gvozdas, a first-year coach with the Wood River girls' varsity soccer team, has been selected as 4A Fourth District Coach of the Year.

Already heralded as Coach of the Year of the Great Basin Conference West (along with Minico's Armando Tapia), Gvozdas guided the Wolverines to a 17-1-1 record and third place in the state 4A tournament.

The Great Basin West and Great Basin Conference champion Wolverines outscored opponents 70-4 and their lone loss came in the first round of the state tournament to runner-up Moscow.

The banquet will be held at the Knights of the Columbus Hall in the St. Edwards building at 206 Seventh Avenue East in Twin Falls, one block off of Shoshone Street at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 14.
