Cutthroat golfers swinging in the rain

District 2A meet in Twin Falls

While the wet weather may prove to be a boon for the watering bills at area courses, the rain did nothing to enhance the games of prep golfers at the 2A District Meet at Twin Falls Municipal Wednesday.

"It rained throughout the day," Community School coach Harry Weekes said. "The kids were soaked. And it was just cold enough. One kid in my group took a shot and launched his club about 75 feet. He said he couldn't feel his hands."

On the par 68 course, Kevin Oden of Wendell emerged as the district champion with a six-over 74. Runner-up was Zach DeKruyf of Magic Valley Christian with a 78.

The top seven individuals qualified for the 2A State Tournament May 16-17 at Burley Municipal Gold Course.

Community School sophomore Christian Cairncross missed the state cut by one stroke. Cairncross fired an 85 to finish in a tie for eighth place. Seventh place recorded an 84.

"Even with the conditions, Christian was not too happy with that," Weekes said."

Weekes said he was pleased with his team's performance.

"Internally we did well," he remarked.

Max Harris and Spencer Harris both recorded 105's. Regan O'Reilly carded a 115.

The Cutthroats placed fifth in the seven-team field with a four-man 410. Glenns Ferry captured the team title with a 343. Magic Valley Christian was second at 349 and Wendell was third at 351. All three teams will attend state, as will Oakley (482) as the meet's host.

In girls' play, Valley's Marisa Griffiths claimed the district title with a 94. Valerie Bedke of Oakley was second at 97. Also qualifying for individual play were Jessi Lancaster of Wendell with a 99, and Lindsey Humphries of Glenns Ferry with a 108. Rachael Becker of The Community School shot 137.
