Northside schools gather for conference finals

Tune-up for state-qualifying meets coming up

It's nitty-gritty time for Northside and Southside conference track and field athletes. The countdown has started to the State 1A track and field meet May 19-21 in Boise.

Athletes are paring down their times and improving jumps and tosses, while prep coaches are in the final stages of assembling relay teams to maximize team results.

If Thursday's Northside/Southside meet at Gooding's ISDB track is any example, the state-qualifying meets will be exciting. The perennial district and state champs from Raft River should rule, but it's anyone's race for second.

Although the Camas County Musher boys won their third consecutive meet last Thursday, by a 47.5 point margin over Oakley, the girls' race was hair raising. Only 10 points separated the top five teams.

Camas County boasted six individual winners led by Trevor Dalin's double in the 100-meter dash and 300m intermediate hurdles. The boys spread the honors around, with 12 different winners in the 13 individual events at ISDB.

Outstanding girls, winning three events apiece, were Katie Strunk of Shoshone (100m, 200m, 400m, second in high jump) and Kristen Egbert of Murtaugh (100m high hurdles, 300m intermediates, long jump and second in the triple jump).

Final standings were tight.

Oakley's 78 points included 34 in the field and 20 in the relays. The second-place Richfield girls (76) had 52 in the distances and field, while Dietrich's sprinters (74) finished third and Carey (69, 30 relays) was fourth just one point up on Shoshone.

Coach Lane Kirkland's Carey girls made progress with Whitney Peck placing second in the discus (85-4) and three Panther relay teams earning seconds (medley, 4x400m, 4x200m). Brooke McAfee continued her strides with a third place in the intermediates.

"The girls improved their times and distances, and the team improved its points," said Kirkland.

Coach Blaine Tingey's Panther boys (35 points distances) came within three points of second place as Blake Whitby (1600m) and Allen Peck (3200m) captured seconds with big time improvements in their distance runs. Carey (24 relays) also had seconds in medley and 4x400m

"The boys really showed up," said Tingey. "We're hoping to get those third, fourth, fifth and sixths that make a difference in a track meet."

With a good turnout of boys in Tingey's final year as coach, Carey has been running double relays in each meet. But Tingey scheduled a series of runoffs last week to put together the fastest teams for the upcoming conference and district meets.

The Northside schools return to Derrick Parke Memorial Field in Carey for the Northside Championships on Thursday, May 5 at 2 p.m.

As three-time defending Northside champs, the Carey girls have won the Northside Conference meet 12 times in the past 13 years, while Camas County is the two-time defending Northside boys' king.

But Kirkland said that Carey will have to compete for the rest of the season without junior sprinting star Brenna Silva (dislocated kneecap).

"We're hoping to perform at our best at our conference meet Thursday," said Kirkland.
