Rodeo circuit makes a Gooding splash

Fairfield's Hurless posts two wins

Wet grounds forced last weekend's Fifth District high school rodeos to move from Jerome to Gooding—but local cowboys and cowgirls did well regardless of where they ran.

Kortnee Hurless of Fairfield took two wins in barrel racing and pole bending Friday night. Carey's Amanda Hill also captured first in barrel racing in Saturday's second rodeo.

Hurless would go on to take second place in goat tying with a time of 8.80. Hailey Baugh of Hailey took fourth place in Saturday's barrel racing.

When all-around point leaders were tabulated, Gooding's Cady Mae Coates (101 points) stayed in first place and Wendell's Rob Webb (65 points) was first for boys.

Amanda Hill (87 points) and Kortnee Hurless (70) are second and third in the overall ranks.

Carey's Bryan Hill placed first and second in steer wrestling at Gooding. Hunt added a second in calf roping. For his efforts, Hunt (59 points) moved into second place in all-around behind Rob Webb.

Brad Hunt of Carey was the only rider to complete a bull ride. He earned first place in the second go-round.

The Fifth District is comprised of cowboys and cowgirls from five counties (Blaine, Lincoln, Jerome, Gooding, Elmore). Next, the circuit bucks into the Shoshone rodeo, May 6-7, followed by the Carey rodeo May 13-14 at Blaine County Fairgrounds, and the Gooding district finals May 27-28.

In addition, the fifth of five cow cutting events is Tuesday, May 10 at 5:30 p.m. at the Stan Barn in Gooding.

Carey's Brittany Hennefer won the second rodeo of girls' cow cutting April 26 at Stan Barn, and finished second in the first go-round. Hennefer is third in the cutting standings.

Bellevue's Kade Smith captured both rodeos at Stan Barn with plus 70-point scores and continues as the Ffith District season leader with an unreachable 80 points after four events.
