Shay Memorial a showcase for track athletes

Wood River girls placed third

Wood River's Rachael Richards and Lisa Romer of Valley probably could have run together all night.

One from the Hailey mountains, the other from the Hazelton flats, the distance runners strode side-by-side in three separate runs during last Wednesday's Bob Shay Memorial meet in Hailey.

Romer let Richards be the pacesetter in the 3200-meter run and the 800m two-lap race, then Romer saved a final-lap burst to streak past Richards and win the 3200m by five seconds and 800m by 1.2 seconds.

The final distance run was the 1600m—and it looked like Romer was going to repeat her tactics and her win. In a thrilling finish, the closest of the day, Richards came from behind in the final 100m to catch Romer and nip her at the end.

Richards finished with 26 individual points at Phil Homer Field as the Wood River girls (96 points) placed third of eight teams in the Hailey squad's only home meet of 2005. Valley's girls (156) trimmed Gooding (125) for team honors.

Wolverine senior field performer Syringa Stark. (28 points) placed second in shotput, triple jump and long jump and fourth in discus.

Wendell senior Jaynie Goodbody, bound for Stanford University, was the marquee performer of the Shay Memorial, named for the legendary Hailey coach. Goodbody (100-meter dash, 200m, shotput, high jump) won all four of her events for 40 of Wendell's 64.

In the boys' meet, Gooding (195 points) ran away with the team title—winning the two long relays, all three distance runs, two sprints and the pole vault. Wendell (81) was second and Wood River (39) fifth.

Carl Browning of Wood River captured the 200m dash in 24.2 seconds and Corbin Miniard won shotput with a season-best toss of 45-6 ½, winning the event by a six inches.

Wood River, coached by J.C. Nemecek and Jeannie Bradshaw, also competed Friday at the 15-school Mini-Cassia Classic meet at Minico High School's track in Rupert.

Stark continued her strong field presence with 12 of her team's 23 points. She placed fourth in the discus (96-0), fifth in long jump (15-4) and sixth in triple jump (33-4 ¾). Stark's discus throw was a big improvement over her Shay toss.

Richards finished fifth at 1600m (5:42.3) and 3200m (12:31.0) while Ruth Anderson was sixth at 3200m (12:46.0). For the boys, Miniard earned a seventh in shotput (44-0 ½).
